nura raises $6 million seed funding to bring personalised sound to the world

Global investors and music visionaries back nura’s world-first sound innovation ahead of its 2017 launch

Personalised sound innovator nura today announced an AU$6 million capital raise following its record-breaking Kickstarter campaign in 2016. The company has now raised more than AU$8.5 million to bring its flagship product - nuraphones - to market. nuraphones are set to revolutionise the way we listen to music. The world-first innovation automatically and objectively detects an individual’s unique hearing profile and adapts the sound to match their ears perfectly.

nura’s latest capital raise attracted interest from a diverse group of global investors and the music industry. Major investors include Sydney-based Blackbird Ventures, the former CEO of Google Access Craig Barrett, and music industry veterans Ric Salmon and Brian Message from UK-based ATC Management, which represents the likes of Nick Cave and PJ Harvey.

The funding will be used to bolster production of nuraphones to cater for the huge demand and the company’s future growth.

We don’t hear with our ears, we hear with our brains. nuraphones are the only product that can automatically, precisely and objectively determine how our ears shape the sound our brain perceives. This is fundamental to perfecting the transmission of music and the way consumer audio systems are designed,”

nura is and always will be motivated by delivering the perfect music experience in any place, for every person. We are so proud of the team, our visionary backers and investors. Our eyes are now firmly fixed on delivering a world class product to our first Kickstarter backers, and this investment will help bolster these efforts and the long term growth of nura”  said Kyle Slater, Co-Founder and CEO at nura.

Investor testimonials

Rick Baker, Partner of Blackbird Ventures:

As is often the case with great startups, the nura story begins with the founders’ passion — for music and hearing. nuraphones are a revolutionary product and it will blow you away when you hear your personalised sound. We have seen nura grow from three to 12 people in 15 months, build a sophisticated global supply chain and become Australia’s biggest Kickstarter campaign. They have a long term vision and a talented team. We love partnering with founders that have that level of drive and ambition.

Ric Salmon, Director and Partner at ATC Management:

"We get approached about new tech a lot. Often, like hearing a band's first demo, it doesn't lead anywhere but the first time Kyle introduced me to the nuraphone prototype, it was immediately obvious they were sitting on a game-changer. To see their growth in such a short space of time has been incredible. What they have created will have a large and positive impact, and we are very proud to be part of the journey.

Craig Barratt, former CEO of Google Access and Atheros:

nura has developed unique technology that dramatically improves how we hear music. I'm excited to see them delivering on their vision as they begin to ship their first product.”

Over the past four years, global sales of audio products have increased rapidly and research indicates that the market is estimated to reach over $15 billion USD ($20 billion AUD) by 2024.

nuraphones will be available for $399 later this year, or can be pre-ordered now for the discounted price of $299.

About nura

Founded in 2015, nura was established with the mission of creating the perfect sound for every person in any place. In 2016 they crowdfunded their flagship product — nuraphones — to the tune of US$1.8m, becoming Australia’s biggest Kickstarter. In just 30 seconds nuraphones are able to objectively understand how you hear without any user response. It does this automatically, by playing a sequence of tones that elicit a response called the Oto Acoustic Emission - a sound our ears make in response to sound. The nuraphones then sonically mould to perfectly match your hearing - providing a far richer, more detailed and immersive experience. nuraphones combine both an in-ear and over-ear design, allowing the listener to feel bass in a tactile way while preserving clarity in melodic
