DARK DAYS FESTIVAL

HARPA, REYKJAVIC

TAKING CONTEMPORARY MUSIC WITH A STORM AT DARK MUSIC DAYS IN REYKJAVÍK

Dark Music Days, an annual festival of contemporary and new music, will take place during the darkest period of the Icelandic winter in Reykjavík from January 25-27 in 2018.

The festival was founded in 1980 by the Iceland Composers Society as a platform for Icelandic composers to present their work. Today the festival is a platform for performing and getting to know new music with an emphasis on new Icelandic compositions and performers in addition to international artists.

We are extremely excited to introduce music enthusiasts to the programme at Dark Music Days in 2018. This year, the festival will present a cross section of pioneering contemporary music from both sides of the Atlantic, and of course Icelandic artists as well,” says Gunnar Karel Masson, Artistic Director at Dark Music Days. “As always, the festival will open with an opening concert at Harpa Music Hall with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, now accompanied by pianist Vikingur Heidar Olafsson and cellist Saeunn Thorsteinsdottir. The list goes on with talented and aspiring composers and performers, such as Caput Ensemble, Nordic Affect, Riot Ensemble and Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra, just to name a few.

This year’s festival focus will lie on works with mixed techniques where the boundaries of contemporary music performance are explored. Performances will take place at the award-winning Harpa concert hall and other venues in the centre of Reykjavík. Tickets will soon be available at tix.is and harpa.is.
